What Is a Kandyan Wedding? A Guide for Couples in Dubai
The poruwa, the nekath and the rituals in between, plus how to plan photography and video so every moment of a Kandyan wedding in Dubai is captured.

For many Sri Lankan couples living in the UAE, a Kandyan wedding is a way to bring home to Dubai. The rituals are short, meaningful and full of symbolism, and most of them happen within a few minutes on the poruwa.
This guide explains the main traditions and how to plan photography and video so none of them are missed.
What Is a Kandyan Wedding?
A Kandyan wedding is the traditional wedding ceremony of Sri Lanka's hill country, centred on the poruwa, a decorated wooden platform. The couple steps onto the poruwa at the nekath, an auspicious time set by an astrologer, and completes a series of rituals including offering betel leaves, tying their little fingers with a gold thread and listening to blessing verses.
The Poruwa Ceremony, Step by Step
Traditions vary between families and regions, but a Kandyan poruwa ceremony commonly includes these moments.
Arrival and Welcome
The couple is often welcomed by traditional drummers and Kandyan dancers. The families gather around the poruwa, which is decorated with flowers, coconut flowers and oil lamps.
Stepping Onto the Poruwa
At the nekath, the couple steps onto the poruwa, usually right foot first. The ceremony is led by a master of ceremonies who guides the couple through each ritual.
Offering Betel Leaves
The couple offers sheaves of betel leaves, a traditional sign of respect, as part of the ceremony.
Tying the Little Fingers
One of the most photographed moments: the couple's little fingers are tied together with a gold thread, and water is poured over their fingers, symbolising a bond that cannot be broken.
Blessing Verses
Young girls, often dressed in white, chant the Jayamangala Gatha, verses of blessing for the couple. Many ceremonies also include an ashtaka, a verse recited for the couple.
Gifts to Family
The groom traditionally presents a white cloth to the bride's mother as a gesture of gratitude. Other gifts may be exchanged between families.
Stepping Down
The couple steps down from the poruwa together, often followed by the lighting of the oil lamp, the breaking of a coconut and the first meal together, with milk rice shared between them.
What Do the Bride and Groom Wear?
The bride usually wears a Kandyan osariya, a saree draped in the hill-country style with a frill at the waist, along with layers of traditional jewellery, often including multi-strand necklaces and a forehead ornament.
The groom often wears the traditional Kandyan costume known as the mul anduma, a richly decorated outfit associated with the Kandyan court, completed with a matching hat.
Planning Photography and Video for a Kandyan Wedding
Because the rituals happen in quick succession, coverage needs to be planned before the day.
Share the Nekath Times
Give your photographer and videographer the nekath times for stepping onto and off the poruwa, plus any other auspicious times. The crew should be in position several minutes early.
Agree Positions Around the Poruwa
The poruwa is usually surrounded by family. Agree with your production team where cameras can stand so they capture the tying of the fingers and the blessings without blocking your guests' view.
Capture the Details
The osariya, jewellery, flowers, oil lamps and betel leaves all tell the story. Ask for detail shots during bridal preparation and before the ceremony begins.
Film the Drummers and Dancers
The welcome procession is one of the most cinematic parts of a Kandyan wedding. Make sure it is on your shot list.
Think About Light
Many Dubai wedding venues are indoors with warm, uneven lighting. A team experienced with venue lighting will plan exposure so skin tones and gold jewellery look natural.
Kandyan Weddings in Dubai and Sri Lanka
Many couples now hold a pre-wedding shoot in Sri Lanka and the wedding in Dubai, or the reverse. Clipnox works in both countries, from a cinematic pre-shoot in Nuwara Eliya to a Kandyan bridal film with Sri Lankan star Yohani Hettiarachchi in Dubai, styled by Dhanush Bridal.
